We are a friendly sociable walking group based in Consett. You would be very welcome to join our group.
Our annual membership fee is £10.00
Things we do and places we visit:
We hire a Coach and pick up in and around the Consett area. There is a schedule of about 14 walks per year starting in March through to October, usually on alternate Saturdays. The Coach fare for the day can be from £12 to £18 depending on the distance to travel.
We normally have two walking groups. One group being of a fairly moderate to high level of fitness walking about 9 to 12 miles. The second group being suitable for a beginner or those wishing to walk at a slower pace for about 5 to 7 miles. We also have members joining us who would like a day exploring the town around which the walking groups are visiting.
During the Summer, the club organises a ‘one week holiday’. In 2025 this holiday was in Wales and in 2026 this was by coach direct from Consett to a hotel in Ilfracombe. This event is generally well attended and members take the opportunity to explore with friends various parts of the UK they may not have visited.
During the winter months, we hold meetings in Citizens House in Consett where a series of talks and presentations are made.

The club was established at an inaugural meeting which took place on 29th April 1907, at that time the clubs was called ‘The Consett and Derwent Valley (Naturalist) Field Club‘. Members subscriptions then were one shilling and six pence per year and ‘ladies be admitted as members free’.
In addition to our Annual General Meeting when details of the Committee and our finances are reported, we have a ‘start of season’ social get-together at Citizens House in Consett where photographs of the previous year walks are shared and details of the upcoming years walks are presented.
We also have a club Facebook page which is open to all current members and this provides information about upcoming walks as well as allowing members to post their photographs of completed walks.
To book your seat, please call Christine (Booking Secretary) on 01207 505826, an Answer Phone is available. Please state the number of seats required, which outing and where to board the coach. The fare to be paid on return journey
Any cancelations must be notified to the booking secretary by midnight on the Wednesday before the Saturday walk. Failure to do so will result in the fare being charged.
When cancelling a walk: If Christine is not available to take the call, please leave a message on the answer machine.
Temporary membership for one month is open to all persons intending to join the club for the first time, prior to seeking full membership. No subscription is required during this period and normal fare for the walks will apply for that month’s trial period. Anyone who does not become a member after the first month but comes on future walks will be charged an additional £2 on top of the fare for the walk on that day. Annual Membership is £10.00
It is a condition of the Club membership that each member is responsible for their own safety on Club outings as well as that of any guests or children that accompany them. Members are expected to always uphold the principles of the Club. To respect wildlife, to observe the countryside code and to leave no litter. Juniors and self drive attendees are expected to pay half fare
